The 2009 PRSSA Bateman Case Study Competition

I’m looking forward to next quarter for three reasons:

1.) This extremely busy and stressful term will be over.

2.) It will be my last quarter!

3.) I will be part of UO’s 2009 PRSSA Bateman Case Study Competition group!

The PRSSA Bateman Case Study Competition is a nationally held competition among participating college PRSSA chapters. It all began in 1973 when PRSA created an opportunity for professionals to exercise their problem-solving skills. In 1983 the competition was given its current title in honor of the late J. Carroll Bateman, APR, and former president of both the Public Relations Society of America (1967) and the International Public Relations Association (1980). PRSSA chapters from around U.S. colleges and universities enter the competition, but only three finalists are chosen to give their presentations for final review. All finalists win monetary awards for their school’s PRSSA chapter. This year, finalists will travel to Washington, D.C.!

My instructor Kelli Matthews made a great point when she said that this competition gives students an opportunity to be part of a campaign from start to finish. I couldn’t let this opportunity pass me by. I want to be a part of something that will give me real hands-on experience with actual results.

There are five girls in this year’s team, including myself, which will be led by Ms. Matthews. This year’s client is the Consumer Bankers Association (CBA) for the College Bound Aid public awareness program, “Hit the Books Running…the more you know, the less you’ll owe.” The purpose of the plan is to target middle schoolers with the barriers of attending college.

Dr. Watson Scott Swail, President of The Educational Policy Institute, identified these four barriers as being:

College Knowledge

Academic Preparation

College Costs

Career Counseling

This sounds like a very interesting case for a very good cause. I look forward to making a difference for this cause, as well as adding great items to my portfolio!

Public relations is all about results, and I look forward to the results my team and I will produce. Hopefully we will make it to the finals in Washington, D.C.!
